Why They Matter

Dear friends,

If you have seen our social media posts over the past few weeks you know we have had a lot to celebrate lately. Let me tell you, behind the scenes, it has been a pretty wild ride.

It all started in April when we learned we’d been named a finalist for a NEXTY Award from the Natural Products Expo. Hurrah! We celebrated like we’d reached the pinnacle of what the year had to offer! After all, the NEXTY’s are a big deal, and being named a Finalist is a huge honour on its own.

Then a couple of weeks later our phones rang off the hook from industry friends near and far congratulating us on our Gold SOFI Award. “Our WHAAAT?!” We’d not only missed an email from the SFA the week previous (junk folder.. ugh), but we didn’t even realize the awards were being announced that day! Incredible.

Surely, that was it…. But not quite. The universe gifted us once more when we were announced the Winner of this year’s NEXTY at Expo West.

Needless to say, the past couple of months have been surreal and, now that the champagne bubbles have settled, the significance of these achievements has come into focus. Real Treat’s is the first Canadian and the first organic cookie to win a Gold SOFI, the highest honour in the specialty gourmet food industry. We are also the only Canadian brand to win a NEXTY in the “Sweet Snacks” category and, as far as we have been able to determine, the only cookie brand to win both awards, let alone in the same year. These are amazing stats, and we are immensely proud to represent Canada, and cookies, this way on the world stage.

But what means the most to me personally gets at the reason I founded Real Treat in the first place. I believe organic agriculture is an integral part of the solution for our ailing planet and the creatures that live here, whether they be honeybees, farmworkers, or any one of my loved ones that have lost their lives too soon to cancer. I am also a foodie to my core and worship at the throne of delicious food that has been cultivated with care and prepared with a passion for flavour. My motto is… If what you are eating doesn’t bring you joy, don’t eat it!

I went looking for an organic cookie that made my foodie heart swoon and there wasn’t one, so I made it.

The Gold SOFI Award means Real Treat makes organic cookies that are delicious enough to rank at the top of the cookie class among the most discerning of judges in gourmet food, and the NEXTY means we are making waves in a sector that values products that innovate with clean ingredients that support good health and the environment. We proved it was possible to succeed with a product that occupies both lanes and that, my friends, is our raison d'être.
